Fangio was a safety on defense at Dunmore High School, which is located outside of Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1975. He went back to his high school in 1979 and served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach there until 1981.

He served as Milford Academy’s defensive coordinator in 1982 before joining the United States Football League’s Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars as a defensive assistant coach in 1984 (USFL).
