Hawn was born in Washington D.C in the United States of America to Laura Steinhoff and Edward Rutledge Hawn. She shares the same parents with her sister, Patti Hawn and her brother, Edward Jr.
Her father was an English and German Presbyterian. Her mother was Jewish and a descendant of Hungarian immigrants.
Hawn attended Montgomery Blair High School in adjacent Silver Spring, Maryland, and was reared a Jew in Takoma Park, Maryland.
At the age of three, Hawn started taking ballet and tap dance training. In 1955, she performed in The Nutcracker with the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo’s corps de ballet.

Hawn starred in movies likes; There’s a Girl in My Soup (1970), Butterflies Are Free (1972), The Sugarland Express (1974), Shampoo (1975), Foul Play (1978), Seems Like Old Times (1980), and Private Benjamin (1980), for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her portrayal of the title character.
She went on to appear in Overboard (1987), Bird on a Wire (1990), Death Becomes Her (1992), Housesitter (1992), The First Wives Club (1996), The Out-of-Towners (1999), and The Banger Sisters (2002), among other films.
With parts in Snatched (2017), The Christmas Chronicles (2018), and The Christmas Chronicles 2 (2020), Hawn made her acting comeback.
Using “life-enhancing strategies for well-being,” Hawn established the Hawn Foundation in 2003. This nonprofit organization offers youth education programs aimed at increasing academic achievement.
The Hawn Foundation has funded research studies carried out by outside academics to assess the efficacy of its MindUP educational program for kids.
